The Ghost of Scozzafava

It seems the NY GOP will never learn that they cannot continue to support liberal candidates and keep getting away with it.

Another blog published an article last year about Doug Hoffman and his grassroots Conservative effort which very nearly tore the Republican Party apart in NY-23.

The first time I had ever heard of either DeDe Scozzafava or Doug Hoffman was when I started doing research for Republicans who were running in political races where the Democrat was either the incumbent or leading the race.  After reading some newspaper articles and her website, I knew right away that Ms. Scozzafava was a RINO – a Republican in Name Only.  I am conservative through and through and everything she said she stands for are things that I am against.  My instincts were proven correct.

A week before the election, too late to have her name removed from the ballot, she jumped ship and threw her support to the Democratic candidate in the race for NY-23, Bill Owens.  I may be speaking out of turn here because I don’t know this to be a fact since I live miles from New York State, but I believe the reason Doug Hoffman filed as a Conservative Party Candidate was because the Republican Party had railroaded him out thinking he could not win.  Even though the Republican Party leadership knew the candidate they backed was recognized as being more liberal than 47% of her liberal cohorts in the New York State Assembly, they ignored normal procedure and picked Scozzafava without giving the people of NY-23 the right to voice their opinions.

[…]

Ms. Scozzafava is now saying that the GOP is “really not based on any sort of substance.”   She told CNN’s Rachel Maddow that the Republicans can not move an agenda forward that can “really help people in this country.”  Ms. Scozzafava continued, “I don’t think it’s good for the health of our party. Any party that just tries to purge members that might have any sort of independent thinking, I think, eventually will run itself to very much of a minority status.” Her opinion is that the Republicans need to reach some sort of consensus with more liberal members of the party.

This is exactly why so many people have left the confines of the Republican Party for the viability of the Conservative Party – no compromise.  As Conservatives, we know what we believe and we stick by it.  We don’t want liberalism which leads to Socialism and all kinds of other “isms” to cloud the agenda of the candidates we support.

I didn’t give up on Doug Hoffman and neither did many in NY-23.  But it seems the Republican Party in NY hasn’t learned their lesson yet.  Maybe it’s time for them to go back to school.

White House Pushing to Get Dede Scozzafava’s Endorsement for Dem (UPDATED)

In the White House, at the very least, officials are bracing themselves for a loss, calling Scozzafava’s departure bad news for Owens. The one hope, they say, is if Scozzafava — who has more philosophical similarities with the Democratic Party than Hoffman’s brand of Republicanism — was to formally endorse her former rival.

Newt Gingrich endorses Dede Scozzafava in NY-23 House race

In a major coup for her campaign, Republican Dede Scozzafava today will pick up the endorsement of News Gingrich, one of the nation’s leading conservative figures and the architect of the “Republican Revolution” in the mid-1990s.

“The special election for the 23rd Congressional District is an important test leading up to the mid-term 2010 elections,” Gingrich said in a statement to supporters. “Our best chance to put responsible and principled leaders in Washington starts here, with Dede Scozzafava.”

Gingrich Explains Scozzafava Endorsement, Slams Right-Wing Critics

Newt Gingrich has put up a new blog post, responding to right-wing criticism for his endorsement of moderate Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava in the NY-23 special election, instead of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman.

Gingrich explains the importance of having a big tent in a party, and of reaching out to moderates who help to build an actual majority. And towards the end, he crosses over into directly questioning the maturity of his detractors…

A message from NY-23 conservative candidate Doug Hoffman

We can win this thing, but we’re up against limited time and an awful RNC and NRCC decision to support a liberal candidate.

Well, if the Republican Party wants to declare war against conservatives, I’m going to fight on the side of conservatives.

Calling them out:  NRCC, RNC & Gingrich back Margaret Sanger Award winner

As I mentioned in my column post on the NY23 special election, the NRCC is using conservatives’ money to back a radical leftist and attack a bona fide, viable conservative candidate for Congress in a safe Republican district. Gingrich has endorsed the radical leftist.

Hoffman vs. Scozzafava; Update:  Whom to blame?

I’m mystified as to how Scozzafava came to be the party’s candidate. Republicans have held the seat with 60+ percent of the vote for more than a decade; they could have named any generic right-winger to succeed John McHugh as rep and he/she would have won in a waltz. Either Scozzafava must have pulled some strings within the state party or the national leadership decided to make this a grand “big tent” gesture by deliberately picking a liberal woman, but the predictable result is an insurgency by a more traditional conservative that’s picking up steam. In fact, Hoffman’s now peeled away enough support from Scozzafava that the Democrat’s in the lead — which I’d normally consider disastrous but, given her record, might not be the worst possible outcome.

Does that refresh your memory a little?  Doug Hoffman was railroaded by the NY GOP nominating folks so he ran as a Conservative Party candidate and almost… so very close… beat the Democrat even with Scozzafava’s endorsement which translates to the endorsement of the NY GOP.

Doug Hoffman remembers too, and he has not given up the fight.  I received this notice from his 2010 campaign today:

Greetings!

You stood with me last year in a fight against Republican chairmen who had lost their way. In fact, none of it would have been possible without your support. I know that you share the same concerns that I do about the importance of choosing Republicans who will stand up and fight for our conservative values. It was this concern that drove me to run on the Conservative Party line against ultra-liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava.

Well, you would think that the Republican chairmen had learned their lesson from that race. If you remember, with the support of thousands of good conservative Republicans in NY-23, we were on track to win that race only to have Scozzafava, a RINO, endorse the Democrat days before the election.

Rarely after losing a race can someone claim victory – but, I feel we did win last year, because conservative Republicans and Tea Party members sent a crystal clear message to GOP leaders in New York and Washington that choosing liberals to run as Republicans would not be taken lying down.

But unfortunately some GOP chairmen in NY-23 don’t seem to have gotten the message.

Earlier this week in Oneida County, Republican leaders endorsed my opponent without even bothering to invite me to the meeting. This in a county where I beat Dede Scozzafava by 2,766 votes and Bill Owens by 982 votes. It should come as no surprise that my opponent was a strong supporter of Dede Scozzafava and most certainly does not represent our conservative values.

It’s okay though. Unlike last year where the party chairmen could anoint a liberal Republican, this year the voters in NY-23 will get to vote in a primary to decide who their Republican nominee is. We currently have a 60 point lead in the polls over my Scozzafava-supporting opponent and we are confident of prevailing on Election Day.

But to do it, I need your help NOW. Some of the party chairmen up here in NY-23 think that people have forgotten what they did last year with Scozzafava. They want conservative Republican voters to just go away and let them decide who gets to run and who doesn’t.

I won’t let them do that! But I need your help!

If the other night’s scheme by the party chairmen to try and secretly anoint a liberal Republican to run in NY-23 is any indication, then these guys will stop at nothing to keep a conservative Republican like me from winning.

And that’s why I’m writing today to ask you to join our team again.

If you want to get an idea of how far some of these party chairmen will go to keep a conservative Republican from winning, l’ve attached an article from a local paper below laying out what is going on in NY-23.

It’s an amazing read, but not surprising. Remember, these are the guys who gave us Dede Scozzafava.

Thank You,

Doug Hoffman

P.S. Here’s that article I mentioned above. We need your help to defeat the establishment and their dirty tricks. Please donate.

Part of that article referenced in Mr. Hoffman’s email carries this disturbing eye-witness account:

The local activist went on to say that, “the endorsement proceedings I just witnessed over here in Oneida County were the least transparent I have ever seen on the local level. I knew that backroom deals and shady political operations like this existed, but never have I seen something quite like this happen within our own committee. The whole affair tonight wasn’t even an honest attempt to be fair. What were the local Republican leaders thinking? It was like some of them were acting like Democrats trying to write a health care bill behind closed doors in the dead of night. Why were the local county officials so afraid of inviting Doug Hoffman so he could make his case? There is obviously something else behind the endorsement that people didn’t know about yet, and it has got to be exposed.”

We must not let this bad judgment from the Republicans continue.  New York, you can stop it this time. Your Primary Election will be held next September 14.  You have several months to prove to the Republican Party in New York as well as in the other 49 states, that this behavior must cease immediately.

Support Doug Hoffman.  Get behind this candidate who wants nothing more than to see conservative values returned to representation from NY-23.
